NSW Suburban has retained the Barraclough Shield after drawing 22-all with Queensland Suburban in their annual interstate challenge played in Sydney.
It’s the third draw in the history of the Shield contests, first played in 1966.
The lead changed four times throughout the match, with neither side able to get ahead by more than a converted try. The NSW team came back from 8-15 down to push out to a lead of 22-15, but Queensland fought back to level the scores.
The game went right to the wire as Queensland took a shot at goal on fulltime but the penalty kick hit the upright.
University prop Andrew Bradford, Pine Rivers Boars No 8 Phillip Broucamp and TC Beirne law school centre David Purcell all scored tries for Qld Suburban, while Wynnum fullback Aaron Savage contributed a penalty and conversion and Pine Rivers replacement back Jamie Tupea added a conversion.
