Knee Pain
Knee pain is a common occurrence in the general population. Pain in the knee can happen for a variety of reasons, both traumatic and deteriorative.
Traumatic injuries are often associated with sport, but can also occur from simple slips and falls or work accidents. Usually they will involve damage to ligaments (typically the anterior cruciate and medial ligaments) and/or the meniscus of the joint, but can also involve bony injury. Accurate assessment of traumatic knee injuries often involves X-rays and scans to determine the degree of damage and whether or not surgery is required. Regardless of whether you go for surgery or not, a comprehensive rehabilitation routine is important to prevent ongoing symptoms or long-term problems in the knee joint.
Physiotherapy for traumatic knee injuries ranges from management of pain and swelling in the acute stages, progressing to rehabilitation and restoration of function as the injury heals, up to return to sport/work activities.
Deteriorative knee conditions are often associated with weaknesses or biomechanical imbalances. Sometimes these are acquired through work or incorrect sport techniques. Sometimes they can be associated with growth and development, especially in adolescents. Often these problems are associated with joint disease and wear and tear when left for too long. Deteriorative knee pain can present anywhere in the knee. It is often associated with stiffness and swelling at rest and pain on activity. It will often appear to have started for no reason. The pain will come and go initially, and for this reason many people do not seek treatment in the early stages. Unfortunately this is the best opportunity to fix the problem. Even if you have a long history of knee pain however, you can benefit from accurate assessment and provision of treatment and exercises by a physiotherapist.
